Transforming Transport (TT) is an award-winning research project funded by the EU under the Horizon 2020 programme. Within the project, Big Data methods for innovative, efficiency-enhancing and sustainable transport models were developed. The project involved the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics with the departments Software & Information Engineering and Transport Logistics as well as leading transport, logistics and information technology partners from different countries. The special feature of the Transforming Transport project was the way in which Big Data was used to demonstrate changes in the mobility and logistics market. The results were presented in a realistic, measurable and replicable way. TT was divided into 13 different pilots from 7 application domains. This separation made it possible to efficiently cover all important sub-areas, which are of great importance for the mobility and logistics sector in Europe.
The Software & Information Engineering department of the IML led the work package on the topics Management of Knowledge, IPR, Data Governance and Data Protection. For this purpose, a general "Data Management Approach" was developed, which was applied in all pilots of the project. Special attention was paid to the consideration of intellectual property rights in all pilot projects.
Another work package in which the Software & Information Engineering department was able to demonstrate its expertise was called "Dynamic E-Commerce Networks". A platform for cross-company data exchange was designed and implemented to facilitate the integration and implementation of heterogeneous company data. The heterogeneous company data is converted into a uniform semantics and structure. This transfer enables the evaluation of the heterogeneous enterprise data with the help of Big Data methods by an E-Business analysis platform, which was developed in the work package.
The Software & Information Engineering department successfully used the opportunity to
- validate the concepts for cross-company data exchange and
- to expand its know-how in this area
The successful completion of the Transforming Transport project was crowned with the Best Success Story Award of the BDVA (Big Data Value Association).
